The Story
- Patristic readings for daily Matins in the traditional Breviary
- Compiled and arranged by Bishop Athanasius Schneider
- Includes Latin and English texts in facing columns
- Features reflections for Advent through Pentecost
- Introduces readers to the Church Fathers’ wisdom and witness
“The entire Scripture is only one book that speaks of Christ.” These words of St. Augustine set the tone for this extraordinary volume.
In this work, Bishop Athanasius Schneider brings together a treasury of Patristic commentaries to accompany the daily biblical readings of the traditional Roman Breviary. Until now, such reflections were not available for the ferial days, leaving a gap in the liturgical prayer of many priests, religious, and lay faithful devoted to the ancient form of the Office.
This collection draws from both Eastern and Western Fathers whose wisdom has guided the Church through the ages. Their writings illuminate Scripture and invite the reader to deeper contemplation and fidelity to Christ in daily prayer.
Arranged by liturgical season—from Advent through Pentecost—each reading is presented in parallel Latin and English, beautifully typeset for clarity and reverence. Brief biographical notes introduce each Father, making this both a practical devotional companion and an introduction to the riches of Patristic theology.
Dedicated to Our Lady, the supreme lover of the Word of God, this book is an offering of love for the Scriptures and a guide to praying them with the mind and heart of the early Church.
